Mothers and sisters will choose Jamaat: Shafiqur Rahman
Shafiqur Rahman, Amir of Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami, has stated that the country’s mothers and sisters will also choose Jamaat in the upcoming national elections.
On Monday (12 January), speaking to reporters after meeting Evers Izabs, chief observer of the European Union election observation mission and a member of the European Parliament, in Bashundhara, Dhaka, he made these remarks.
Shafiqur Rahman said that in the upcoming election, the people of the country will ensure good governance. “We have complete faith in the people. We only want the election to be free and fair,” he added.
He said that if the people elect another party through a free and fair election, Jamaat will accept the outcome and cooperate. “We will stand with those who are against corruption, support the independence of the judiciary, and advocate for necessary reforms,” he added.
The Jamaat Amir expressed concern about the fairness of the upcoming election. He said that any concerns will first be communicated to the Election Commission, and if not resolved, the matter will be brought before the nation.
He further stated that if this election slips away from the people, they do not know when the citizens will regain their right to vote.
Regarding the country’s media, Shafiqur Rahman alleged that recently the media has been leaning toward a particular party. He claimed that the media played a similar role during the previous uprisings.
He said, “We want the media to work independently. If the media or the administration voluntarily puts themselves in chains of subservience, it amounts to deceiving the people. The people remember everything; there is no opportunity to take them for fools.”
The Jamaat Amir also spoke about maintaining balanced relations with neighboring countries if they come to power in the election. He stated that all countries will be treated in a neighborly and equitable manner.
