Mother's body decomposes: State Minister assures action against her son
State Minister for Public Administration Md. Abdul Bari has said that legal action will be taken against her son and Joint Secretary to the government AKM Anisur Rahman in the case of the recovery of the half-decomposed body of elderly Nurjahan Begum from her flat in the capital's Mirpur. He told the media on Wednesday morning (June 3).
The State Minister said, "The matter is being closely scrutinized and necessary action will be taken as per the prevailing laws and rules. Considering the moral responsibility of a high-ranking government official seriously, the concerned officials have been instructed to look into the entire incident."
He also said that the accused AKM Anisur Rahman is currently serving as the member (engineering and development) of the Mongla Port Authority.
When asked what action will be taken by the ministry in this incident, Md. Abdul Bari said, "There is a law that has provisions regarding the maintenance of parents. If it is effective, we will take action according to that law."
It is worth noting that the police recovered the decomposed body of elderly Nurjahan Begum from a flat in Mirpur-11 area of the capital on Sunday (May 31) after receiving a call from neighbors on the national emergency service number 999. This inhumane incident created a huge stir and discussion across the country.
According to the investigation and neighbors, Nurjahan Begum has two sons and a daughter. The daughter is a school teacher by profession and she lived in the same house with her mother in the same room. However, even after her mother died, she did not inform the law enforcement agencies about the matter.
According to the neighbors, another son of Nurjahan, AKM Ashikur Rahman, is a professor in the Computer Science and Engineering (CSE) Department of Bangladesh University of Engineering and Technology (BUET). Both sons lived separately from their mother and had no contact with their mother for a long time.
