MP Gazi Nazrul submits bail bond in court in attempt-to-murder case filed

Satkhira-4 constituency MP Gazi Nazrul Islam has submitted the bail bond at the Dhaka court after getting bail from the High Court in the attempt-to-murder case filed by the maternal uncle of his second wife. He came to the court of Additional Metropolitan Magistrate of Dhaka Aulad Hossain Muhammad Junaid and submitted this bail bond on Sunday.

Sub-Inspector (SI) of the Prosecution Division of DMP Saiful Islam has confirmed this information to Prothom Alo. He said Gazi Nazrul Islam got eight weeks’ bail from the High Court in this case on August 10. He submitted that bail bond today.

The complainant of this case Obaidur Rahman is the personal car driver of Gazi Nazrul Islam. He is the maternal uncle of Mosammat Mariam Khatun, the second wife of Nazrul Islam. He had filed this case against Gazi Nazrul Islam, 74, and his four accomplices at Pallabi police station of the capital on July 21. He had brought the allegation of attempt to murder by beating and strangulation on suspicion of protest against the immoral relationship and leakage of the video. The other accused of the case are Aminur Rahman, 55, Masum Billah, 41, Motassim Billah, 25, and Rakibul Hasan, 30.

It is said in the FIR of the case that Obaidur Rahman used to stay at the house of his sister in ‘Rose Garden Tower’ of Kalshi area of Pallabi of the capital. He used to work as the personal car driver of Gazi Nazrul Islam. There was movement at that house of Nazrul Islam due to the relationship of kinship. At one stage the allegation arose that an immoral relationship was created between the niece of Obaidur and Nazrul Islam. After coming to know the matter Obaidur informed the family and requested Nazrul Islam to refrain from this relationship. Getting angry at this Nazrul Islam threatened him with death.

It is further said in the FIR that recently a gang of Maghbazar collected some ‘unpleasant videos’ of Nazrul Islam and that young woman and kept blackmailing him. Due to this Nazrul Islam suspected that Obaidur himself had secretly recorded the video and given it to the media and that gang. From that suspicion the other accused carried out an attack on Obaidur on his order on July 14.

According to the statement of the complainant Obaidur Rahman, that day around 11am Aminur Rahman called him to the drawing room of the house by trick. There he was beaten indiscriminately with sticks taking the other accused with them. At one stage Aminur threw him on the floor and tried to kill him by strangling the neck. At this time his mother Tahmina and younger sister Mim screamed and the attackers fled. Later he took treatment at Kurmitola General Hospital in injured condition.

Gazi Nazrul Islam was elected as MP from Satkhira-4 constituency in the 13th parliamentary election as a candidate of Jamaat-e-Islami. Recently multiple videos of his ‘personal moments’ with that young woman spread on social media. In these videos this MP of Jamaat-e-Islami is seen intimately with the young woman.

Immediately after the publication of the video many leaders and workers of Jamaat kept claiming on social media that it was created with artificial intelligence (AI) technology. However Gazi Nazrul Islam informed by giving a post on his own Facebook ID that that young woman is his second wife Mariam Begum. The marriage was completed in a family manner and with the consent of his first wife at the residence of Mariam Begum’s father Masum Billah in Dhaka on June 17. Jamaat-e-Islami expelled Nazrul Islam from the party over this incident.
