MP Gazi Nazrul, wife remanded over second wife’s death

A Dhaka court has placed Member of Parliament (MP) from Satkhira-4 constituency Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam on a four-day remand and his first wife Maksuda Islam on a one-day remand in a case filed over allegedly abetting his second wife, Mariam Khatun, to commit suicide.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam passed the order as police produced the couple before the court and pleaded to place them on a seven-day remand in the case.

Police recovered Mariam's body hanging from a ceiling fan inside Flat No. 203 on the third floor of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban on the evening of September 20. The Satkhira-4 lawmaker and his first wife were taken into custody after that.

Mariam's father SM Masum Billah filed the case with Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station this morning against Gazi Mohammad Nazrul Islam, Maksuda Islam and Mariam's maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman for allegedly abetting her suicide.

According to the case documents, Mariam, 19, married MP Gazi Nazrul in June, 2026, under the “direct instigation” of Obaidur Rahman. Mariam had been living with Nazrul and Maksuda at Flat No. 203 of Building No. 5 of NAM Bhaban, opposite the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban.

Mariam had told her family that Nazrul and Maksuda had been physically and mentally torturing her over various issues since the marriage.

At around 5:30pm on September 20, Nazrul called the plaintiff over the phone and asked him to go to the flat immediately. Upon reaching there, Masum Billah found Mariam hanging by her neck.

The case statement said the family found a suicide note written by Mariam on her bed while recovering the body.
