MP Gazi Nazrul’s second wife Mariam had to sleep on the balcony of NAM building: Investigation officer

Investigation officer of the case has informed the court that second wife of Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam, Mariam Khatun, had to sleep even on the balcony beside his bedroom in the flat of NAM building. This has been informed on the basis of information obtained in the interrogation of Gazi Nazrul.

Gazi Nazrul was produced in court after a total of eight days’ remand in two phases in the case filed on allegation of abetment to suicide of Mariam on Monday (September 28). At that time investigation officer of the case Inspector of DB Tejgaon Zone Mohammad Salauddin applied for keeping him in jail custody. After hearing the court of Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Mohammad Ehsanul Islam rejected his bail application and ordered to send him to jail.

In the application given in court the investigation officer said in the interrogation Gazi Nazrul informed that Mariam’s father SM Masum Billah is his relative. When he came to Dhaka he used to stay at that relative’s house and used to conduct parliamentary works there. Through that source his acquaintance and closeness with Mariam developed. Later their marriage took place as per religious custom on June 17 and subsequently kabin was registered locally.

It has been further said in the application of the investigation officer that Gazi Nazrul used to live with his first wife Maksuda Islam and second wife Mariam in the flat of NAM building. Information has been obtained in the interrogation that although Nazrul stayed in the bedroom with the first wife Mariam sometimes had to spend the night on the balcony beside the bedroom. The investigation officer has also informed the court about obtaining more important information in the investigation of the case.

Earlier on the evening of September 20 police recovered the body of Mariam, 19, from flat number 203 of building number 5 of NAM building opposite the National Parliament building. Later that night Gazi Nazrul and his first wife Maksuda were taken into custody. The next day Mariam’s father as the plaintiff filed a case at Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station against Gazi Nazrul, Maksuda Islam and Mariam’s maternal uncle Obaidur Rahman on allegation of abetment to suicide.

After the case the court granted four days’ remand of Gazi Nazrul and one day’s remand of Maksuda on September 21. Later the investigation responsibility of the case was transferred to DB. After one day’s remand Maksuda was sent to jail. On September 23 the court also ordered to send the third accused of the case Obaidur Rahman to jail.

After the end of the first phase of remand of Gazi Nazrul he was taken on another four days’ remand in the second phase on September 24. After the end of that remand he was sent to jail on Monday. The investigation into the allegation of abetment to suicide in the incident of Mariam’s death is still ongoing and these information raised in court have been presented in the application of the investigation officer.
