MP Nazrul has meal with two wives at noon, new information emerging

New information has come to light in the recovery of the hanging body of Mosammat Mariam Khatun, 19, the second wife of Satkhira-4 constituency Member of Parliament Gazi Nazrul Islam from a flat in the NAM Building in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar of the capital. Her body was recovered from flat No 203 on the third floor of Building No 5 of NAM Building on Sunday afternoon. However, police have not yet reached any decision on whether Mariam’s death is murder or suicide.

According to the version of a police officer present at the scene, Gazi Nazrul Islam had a meal together with his two wives at noon on Sunday. After finishing the meal they went to separate rooms around 3:30pm. Later around 5pm when Gazi Nazrul went to call Mariam he found the door of her room locked from inside.

According to the information of that police officer, not getting any response from Mariam even after calling several times Gazi Nazrul at one stage looked inside the room through the window. Then he saw Mariam in a hanging state with a scarf from the fan. Later the matter was informed to the police. Getting the news police of Sher-e-Bangla Nagar Police Station went to the scene.

Deputy Police Commissioner (DC) of Tejgaon Division Ibn Mizan informed that getting the news he and the police members of the police station reached the scene. The body was seen in a hanging state through the window of the room. Later when the members of the forensic teams of PBI and CID reached the scene the door was broken and entry was made into the room in their presence and the body was brought down.

Police informed that no immediate information could be obtained regarding exactly when Mariam died. Evidence from the scene is being collected to determine the time of death and what happened before and after the incident. The forensic team has examined the room and collected the necessary evidence.

Police have also not yet given any confirmed information on the cause of Mariam’s death. DC of Tejgaon Division Ibn Mizan has informed that whether the incident is murder or suicide is being examined through investigation. For this importance is being given to the evidence from the scene, the results of the forensic examination and the information of subsequent investigation.

Extensive discussion had been created earlier around Mariam Khatun in July. At that time several videos of the personal moments of Gazi Nazrul Islam and Mariam spread on social media. Discussions took place in various quarters ranging from the claim of the videos being created with AI to the authenticity of the videos. Later Gazi Nazrul Islam publicly claimed that the young woman in the video Mariam is his second wife and he married her with the consent of the first wife.

Centering that incident various questions also later arose regarding Mariam’s biodata, Gazi Nazrul Islam’s signature and the recommendation made there. At the same time a case of attempt to murder was filed against Gazi Nazrul Islam at Pallabi Police Station. In that case he received eight weeks’ bail from the higher court and submitted that bail bond at the Dhaka court on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Gazi Nazrul Islam was expelled from Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami on July 22 after the video incident. From the party’s side it had been informed that evidence of moral deviation against him was found in the organisational investigation. However, police have not yet given any statement on whether there is any direct link between these previous incidents and Mariam’s death. One will have to wait until the investigation is completed to know the actual cause of Mariam’s death.
