Mustafa Monowar's funeral Tuesday, burial at Banani in afternoon

Eminent artist, puppeteer and cultural personality Mustafa Monowar will be buried at Banani Graveyard in the capital on Tuesday afternoon. Before the burial, his body will be taken to his long-time workplace Bangladesh Television (BTV) premises, the Central Shaheed Minar and the Faculty of Fine Arts at Dhaka University.

Artist Moniruzzaman, in consultation with the family, announced the farewell programme to the media. He said the body will first be taken to BTV premises at 9:00 am on Tuesday. The first funeral prayer will be held there, as it was his long-time workplace.

At 10:30 am, the body will be taken to the Central Shaheed Minar, where it will remain until 12:30 pm for people from all walks of life to pay their respects.

After the second funeral at Dhaka University Central Mosque, the body will be taken to the Faculty of Fine Arts — the institution where he taught for many years. Colleagues, current and former students will pay their final respects to their beloved teacher. After the formalities at the Fine Arts faculty, he will be laid to rest at Banani Graveyard in the afternoon.

Moniruzzaman said the phased programme has been arranged to allow people from all walks of life to pay tribute to the artist. The decision to take the body to BTV and the Fine Arts faculty was made to honour Mustafa Monowar's long career.

Earlier on Monday afternoon, after the ritual bath at Takwa Mosque in Dhanmondi, Mustafa Monowar's body was brought to his residence in Dhanmondi, where family members, relatives, colleagues and well-wishers paid their respects. The body was later kept at Square Hospital's cold storage for preservation.

Mustafa Monowar passed away at Square Hospital in the capital on Monday morning, June 29, at the age of 91.
