Narayanganj MP Mannan’s son detained over extortion charges
Khairul Islam Sajib, the senior joint convener of the District Jubo Dal and son of Azharul Islam Mannan—the BNP Member of Parliament for the Narayanganj-3 (Sonargaon-Siddhirganj) constituency and president of Sonargaon Thana BNP—has been detained by police over multiple allegations, including extortion and harassment.
Narayanganj District Police, with the assistance of the Dhaka Metropolitan Detective Branch (DB), took Sajib into custody from his residence in the capital's Bashundhara Residential Area on Sunday afternoon.
He was initially brought to the Narayanganj District Superintendent of Police office for preliminary interrogation. Following more than an hour of questioning, he was transferred to the DB headquarters on Minto Road in Dhaka around 6:30pm for further interrogation.
Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Tareq Al Mehdi told the media that Sajib was brought in for questioning under orders from higher authorities following multiple complaints from victims, primarily regarding extortion.
While declining to disclose specific details for the sake of the investigation, the police official revealed that at least six complaints have been lodged against Sajib in Narayanganj, alongside several others in Dhaka. The allegations notably include extortion, harassment, women-related issues, and intimidation. However, no formal cases have been filed yet, and there are currently no active lawsuits against him.
Additional Commissioner of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) Shafiqul Islam stated that Sajib is being interrogated to verify the authenticity of the allegations. He added that if the claims are proven true, the victims will file formal cases.
Meanwhile, Sajib has been expelled from all positions, including his primary membership, of the Jubo Dal—the youth wing of the BNP—following the allegations of irregularities. A press release signed by Nurul Islam Shohel, Vice President of the Jubo Dal Central Executive Committee, stated that the organization will not bear the responsibility for the misdeeds of any expelled individual, and instructed party leaders and activists at all levels to sever all organizational ties with him.
