Nasir Hossain-Tamima aquitted in marriage-related case
A Dhaka court has acquitted former Bangladesh national cricketer Nasir Hossain and his wife Tamima Sultana in a widely discussed case over allegations of marrying without legally ending a previous marriage.
Additional Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Jashita Islam passed the order on Wednesday (June 10), concluding a four-year-long legal battle.
The court ruled that the allegations against Nasir Hossain and Tamima Sultana were not proven, stating that their marriage did not constitute any criminal offence. As a result, both were cleared of all charges.
The case came to light in February 2021 after photos of their marriage circulated on social media, prompting Tamima’s former husband, Rakib Hossain, to file a case.
The complaint alleged that Tamima had married Nasir in 2020 while still legally married to Rakib, with whom she had tied the knot in 2011 and shares a daughter.
Following investigation, a charge sheet was submitted in September 2021, naming Nasir, Tamima, and Tamima’s mother, Sumi Akter, as accused. However, the court later discharged Sumi Akter from the case.
The trial officially began in March 2023 with the testimony of the complainant. Over the course of proceedings, the court examined 10 witnesses, with testimony concluding in April 2025.
Both accused consistently denied the allegations and claimed that Tamima’s previous marriage had been legally dissolved before her marriage to Nasir Hossain.
The defence argued that there was no breach of law in the marriage, a position the court ultimately upheld in its ruling.
Following the verdict, Nasir Hossain and Tamima Sultana were present in court, while their lawyers expressed satisfaction over the decision.
