As many as 130 aggrieved aspirants lodged appeals before the Election Commission on Saturday, challenging the decisions of the returning officers (RO) over the cancellation and the acceptance of nomination papers in the upcoming national elections slated for January 7. With the 130 new petitioners, a total of 561 aspirants have so far challenged the ROs’ decisions after the EC started receiving petitions on Tuesday. EC Secretary Jahangir Alam informed the matter at a press conference in Agargaon Nirbachon Bhaban on Saturday (December 9). According to the election schedule, the last date for the withdrawal of nominations is December 17. Symbols will be allotted to the political parties, and the election campaign will begin on December 18.

আসন্ন দ্বাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনে প্রার্থিতা ফিরে পেতে ও বাতিল চেয়ে এখন পর্যন্ত পাঁচদিনে নির্বাচন কমিশনে (ইসি) আপিল আবেদন করেছেন ৫৬১ প্রার্থী। রাজধানীর আগারগাঁওয়ের নির্বাচন ভবন চত্বরে প্রার্থীরা এ আপিল আবেদন করেন। শনিবার (৯ ডিসেম্বর) আগারগাঁও নির্বাচন ভবনে এক সংবাদ সম্মেলনে বিষয়টি জানান ইসি সচিব জাহাংগীর আলম। ইসি কর্মকর্তারা বলেন, প্রার্থিতা ফিরে পেতে ও বাতিল চেয়ে প্রথম দিন ৪২ জন, দ্বিতীয় দিন ১৪১ জন, তৃতীয় দিন ১৫৫ জন, চতুর্থ দিন ৯৩ জন এবং আজ ১৩০ জন আপিল করেছেন। পাঁচদিনে মোট ৫৬১ জন প্রার্থী ইসিতে আপিল করেছেন। এরমধ্যে বেশ কিছু বৈধ প্রার্থীর প্রার্থিতা বাতিল চেয়ে আবেদনও করা হয়েছে। এদিকে তপশীল অনুযায়ী, আগামী ৭ জানুয়ারি দ্বাদশ জাতীয় সংসদ নির্বাচনের ভোটগ্রহণ অনুষ্ঠিত হবে। নির্বাচনে মনোনয়নপত্র জমা দেওয়ার শেষ তারিখ ছিল ৩০ নভেম্বর। ১ ডিসেম্বর থেকে বাছাই শুরু হয়, শেষ হয় ৪ ডিসেম্বর সন্ধ্যায়। রিটার্নিং কর্মকর্তার সিদ্ধান্তের বিরুদ্ধে আপিল ও শুনানি ১৫ ডিসেম্বর পর্যন্ত এবং ১৭ ডিসেম্বরের মধ্যে মনোনয়নপত্র প্রত্যাহার করা যাবে। প্রতীক বরাদ্দ দেওয়া হবে ১৮ ডিসেম্বর।
