National progress impossible without women’s inclusion: President
President Mohammad Shahabuddin has said that national progress and prosperity cannot be achieved by keeping women outside the mainstream of the state and society.
Speaking at a discussion marking International Women's Day at the Osmani Memorial Auditorium in the capital on Sunday (March 8), he emphasised the need for effective measures to ensure women’s rights and to inspire younger generations with values of equality.
The president said the government has introduced a “family card” initiative aimed at empowering economically disadvantaged women and strengthening the financial resilience of families.
He also highlighted that former president Ziaur Rahman and former prime minister Khaleda Zia had taken groundbreaking initiatives to advance women’s political and economic empowerment.
According to the president, the current government is planning to provide free education for women up to the postgraduate level while implementing programmes like the family card scheme to enhance women’s economic independence.
During the event, the “Indomitable Women Award” was conferred on Khaleda Zia. The award was received on her behalf by her granddaughter, Zaima Rahman.
Five women were also honoured among 39 nominees across eight categories.
At the ceremony, Zubaida Rahman described Khaleda Zia’s resilience as a symbol of women’s strength and leadership and called for renewed commitment to integrity, dignity and social justice on International Women’s Day.
Women and Children Affairs Minister AZM Zahid Hossain said Khaleda Zia had brought transformative changes in women’s education, and that the momentum is being carried forward by Tarique Rahman.
The discussion and award ceremony drew participation from thousands of women from different professions and backgrounds.
