Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has announced the launch of a nationwide cleanliness campaign to prevent deadly diseases like dengue and chikungunya. The campaign will be conducted every week starting from March 14.

In a special video message to the nation on Wednesday, the Prime Minister said dengue and chikungunya spread through the bite of Aedes mosquitoes. Therefore, taking preventive measures in advance is the most effective approach. He highlighted awareness and cleanliness as the key to preventing dengue.

He said although dengue outbreaks are more common during the monsoon season, particularly from June to October, the disease is no longer limited to a specific season. The risk of infection exists throughout the year. He also warned that stagnant water for just three days can become a breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes.

The Prime Minister urged everyone to keep drains, ditches and sewers clean, prevent water from accumulating in flower tubs, drums, buckets, discarded tyres or on rooftops, and keep water tanks covered. He emphasised the need to clean homes and courtyards at least once a week.

Alongside government initiatives, he called upon local administrations, members of parliament and public representatives to engage the public and conduct cleanliness activities in their respective areas every Saturday.

He said prevention is better than cure. Regular cleanliness campaigns can protect the people of the country from life-threatening diseases like dengue and chikungunya.
