NCP leader Gazi Salahuddin sent to jail in PM defamation case

A court has sent Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir, who was relieved from the central committee of the National Citizen Party (NCP), to jail in a case filed over posting objectionable/defamatory content on Facebook regarding Prime Minister Tarique Rahman.

Senior Judicial Magistrate Mehedi Hasan of the Bogura Sadar Amli Court issued the order to send him to jail around 12pm on Wednesday. During this time, several agitated activists of the Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal threw eggs at him on the court premises. Bogura court inspector Shafiqul Islam confirmed the matter to media.

Bogura Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Ibrahim Ali said police arrested Tanvir from Dhaka in a raid on Tuesday night. He was later brought to Bogura and produced before the court.

On August 2, HS Maftun Ahmed Khan Rubel, president of Bogura Sadar upazila BNP, filed a case against Gazi Salahuddin Tanvir under the Cyber Security Act 2026 at Sadar Police Station over allegations of posting objectionable Facebook content against the Prime Minister.

Following the objectionable Facebook post about the Prime Minister, the NCP's central executive committee on July 31 temporarily relieved Tanvir from the post of joint member secretary. He was also issued a show-cause notice.
