The National Citizen Party has formally asked the Election Commission to exclude the Jatiya Party from the 13th parliamentary election.

After meeting chief election commissioner AMM Nasir Uddin at the Election Commission building in Agargaon on Tuesday, January 6, NCP spokesperson Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan said the party had been a collaborator of past authoritarian rule and should not be allowed to contest.

He said the NCP opposed any attempt to rehabilitate the Jatiya Party through elections and had made its position clear to the commission.

Asked about the commission’s response, Asif Mahmud said officials had listened to their concerns and stated that any decision would be taken in accordance with the law.

Meanwhile, nomination scrutiny shows that 57 of the Jatiya Party’s 224 candidates have had their nominations cancelled, leaving 167 candidates eligible to contest.
