NDB leaders Momin Mehedi, Shanta Farzana among 6 sent to jail

A Dhaka court has ordered six individuals, including Momin Mehedi, chairman of political organisation Natundhara Bangladesh (NDB), and its senior vice chairman Shanta Farzana, to be sent to jail in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.

The other accused sent to jail are the organisation's vice chairman Nurjahan Neera, joint secretary Moniruzzaman, organisational secretary Aftab Mandal and Hari Sharker.

Police produced them before the Chief Metropolitan Magistrate's Court in Dhaka today. The investigating officer then applied to keep them in jail custody until the investigation of the case is completed. After hearing the arguments, Metropolitan Magistrate Kamal Uddin ordered them sent to jail.

According to the case complaint, the accused are associates of the Awami League and conspirators against the current government. On Tuesday evening, around 7pm, the accused were staging provocative slogans and a procession in front of the National Press Club. At that time, Babul Sarkar and Al Noor Mohammad Ayas, member secretary of the State Dialogue Forum, along with several others from the July movement, protested against them. The accused then attacked them with local weapons, sticks, SS pipes, chairs and hockey sticks. Ayas and several others were injured in the attack. Ayas was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital in critical condition.
