New cyber law being drafted to curb fake news, ensure press freedom: Information Minister

Information and Broadcasting Minister Andaleeve Rahman Partho has said a modern cyber law is being drafted to ensure independent journalism.

He made the remarks at an event marking the anniversary of Dhaka Reporters Unity on Thursday, September 10.

He further said the initiative to draft the new law takes into account concerns that fake information should not create instability in society and that press freedom should not face any interference.

Information Minister Andaleeve Rahman Partho said discussions had been held with importance given to ensuring that fake information does not create instability in society and that there is no interference in press freedom. With these goals in mind, efforts are underway to create a modern law.

Andaleeve Rahman Partho said alongside drafting the new law, consideration is also being given to ensuring it is not misused in any way.
