New cyber security unit being added to police: Home Minister

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said a separate cyber security unit will be formed under the police next week. He said the unit will have branches at the metropolitan, division and district levels.

The Home Minister conveyed this information in his speech at the police medal distribution ceremony in the capital on Saturday, September 26.

Salahuddin Ahmed said, "A separate cyber security unit will be formed next week. For this, if a post of an Additional IGP at the Police Headquarters has not been created, we will create it."

He said, "Its branches will be at all metro, division and district levels. There will be modern equipment for the cyber security unit at the thana and district levels. Large-scale forensic labs and whatever support is needed will be at the headquarters and division levels."

The Home Minister said instructions were given a few weeks ago to prepare a project for forming the cyber security unit. Complex matters will be sent to the central level. And matters that can be analysed at the thana, district and divisional levels will be tackled there.

He said, "We have seen that the crimes being committed by creating cyberspace are a feature of modern crime trends."

Highlighting the spread of cybercrime and scam-based crime, Salahuddin Ahmed said, "In some countries, up to 44 percent of crimes are cyber or scam-based. That is why we have to give importance to this."
