New pay scale for govt employees from July 1
Good news is coming for government officials and employees at the beginning of the upcoming 2026-27 fiscal year. The new salary structure is going to be implemented in stages from July 1. The government will spend an additional 1 lakh 6 thousand crore taka to fully implement this new pay scale. Apart from this, about 25 thousand crore taka will be required for retired officials or pensioners. Multiple reliable sources at the top level of the government have confirmed this information.
A senior official of the Finance Ministry, who did not want to be named, told the media that the Prime Minister has given the final decision to implement the new pay scale from the first day of the next fiscal year. As a result, there is no doubt about getting salaries in the new structure from July.
He also said that the new structure can basically be fully implemented in stages in three fiscal years. As a result, not only will the pressure on the country's inflation be less, but it will also be easier for the government to finance itself.
According to the draft plan of the officials, half or 50 percent of the increased basic salary of the new structure may be given in the first phase starting from July 1. To meet this additional cost, an additional allocation of more than Tk 30,000 crore is being made in the next budget. The remaining 50 percent of the basic salary will be implemented in the next fiscal year 2027-28 and all other allowances will be added to the basic salary in the next fiscal year (2028-29).
Incidentally, currently, Tk 85,000 crore is allocated in the budget for the salaries and allowances of about 1.5 million government officials and employees in the country. The Finance Minister has included the issue of giving this pay scale in a phased manner in the draft speech of the upcoming budget.
Earlier, the National Pay Commission formed during the tenure of the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus submitted a recommendation on January 22. It proposed an increase in the basic salary of government employees starting from 100 percent to a maximum of 147 percent depending on the grade.
According to the commission's recommendations, the basic salary of the lowest or 20th grade has been increased from Tk 8,250 to Tk 20,000 and the basic salary of the highest grade has been increased from Tk 78,000 to Tk 160,000. At the same time, there is a proposal to significantly increase the financial benefits of pensioners, including medical and social allowances, which will see the light of day in stages from next July.
