New PSC chairman Nazmuzzaman Bhuiyan takes oath

Professor Dr Mohammad Nazmuzzaman Bhuiyan, the newly appointed chairman of the Bangladesh Public Service Commission (PSC), took oath of office on Sunday (September 6).

Chief Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury administered the oath at the Supreme Court Judges’ Lounge in the afternoon.

Judges of the Appellate Division and PSC officials attended the ceremony.

Bhuiyan, a professor of law at the University of Dhaka, was appointed PSC chairman by the government on September 2.

The appointment was made by the President under Article 138(1) of the Constitution in the public interest. Under Article 139(1), he will serve for five years from the date of assuming office or until he reaches the age of 65, whichever comes first.

The PSC chairmanship fell vacant after Professor Mobasher Monem resigned on August 18.

Monem had been appointed PSC chairman in October 2024 during the interim government. He took charge after then PSC chairman Md Sohrab Hossain and 12 other commission members resigned following the 2024 mass uprising and the subsequent formation of the interim government.

Monem, a professor of public administration at the University of Dhaka, was later appointed to lead the commission.
