For the first time in the country, the reovirus has been detected. The Institute of Epidemiology, Disease Control and Research (IEDCR) has confirmed that five individuals have been infected with the virus.

However, no severe complications have been reported in any of the cases. All five individuals have fully recovered and returned home after receiving treatment. The health department has reassured the public that there is no cause for concern regarding the virus.

Professor Tahmina Shirin, Director of IEDCR, said, "Many people get infected with the Nipah virus every year after drinking raw date palm juice. Recently, IEDCR tested samples from 48 people with similar symptoms. While no traces of the Nipah virus were found, reovirus was detected in five individuals. This new pathogen was identified through regular research in collaboration with Columbia University in the United States."

Reovirus generally spreads through sneezing and coughing. Symptoms can include respiratory issues, fever, headache, vomiting, and diarrhea. In severe cases, it can lead to pneumonia or encephalitis (inflammation of the brain). Children and the elderly are more susceptible to this virus.

"There have been many cases of encephalitis in the country, but the cause has not been identified. This research will help in the treatment of such patients," Tahmina Shirin added.

It is important to mention that the reovirus was first identified worldwide in 1950, and its prevalence tends to rise during the winter season.
