NID service for expats to be launched in Japan and Canada
National Identity Card (NID) service for Bangladeshis living in Japan and Canada will be launched soon.
Election Commission (EC) has informed that the programme will start in Japan by the end of this month while in Canada by the beginning of September.
Director General of the EC's NID Wing, ASM Humayun Kabir, told the media that the installation of technical equipment and training have already been completed in Tokyo, Japan and Toronto, and Ottawa, Canada. The work of issuing NID on a trial basis is also underway in some cases. He hopes that it will be officially inaugurated very soon.
Although the programme was supposed to start in Japan in July, it was delayed due to some local problems. EC Secretary Akhtar Ahmed is visiting Japan to resolve these problems.
On the other hand, Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin will go there in the last week of this month to inaugurate the service in Canada.
Once this service is launched in Japan and Canada, Bangladeshis living in 10 countries around the world will be able to access NID services through 17 mission offices.
