No instances of labor unrest in garment factories: BGMEA
The Bangladesh Garment Manufacturers and Exporters Association (BGMEA) has reported that there are no instances of labor unrest in garment factories.
The organization made the statement on Sunday (September 15).
According to BGMEA, production activities are proceeding normally in 394 factories in the Savar and Ashulia areas. Additionally, 7 factories are currently closed, with 6 of these having ceased production even after reopening. However, there have been no incidents of labor unrest.
Earlier last Saturday (September 14) night, BGMEA had announced the normal operation of all garment factories. BGMEA President Khandoker Rafiqul Islam made this declaration in light of the government's assurance to implement adequate security measures in industrial areas, including garment factories, and the commitment from labor union leaders to encourage workers to resume work.
He said, "The government has promised to enhance security at garment factories. As a result, all garment factories will reopen from Sunday, September 15. However, if any factory experiences unrest, it will be closed indefinitely in accordance with Section 13/1 (No work, no pay) of the Labor Act."
Adilur Rahman Khan, Advisor to the Industries Minister of the interim government, stated, "It has been decided that all factories will remain open starting Sunday, September 15. Factory owners who deliberately keep their facilities closed and contribute to an unstable situation will also be held accountable."
