No more monthly fees for prepaid meters: Power Minister
The government has decided to scrap the monthly charge for prepaid electricity meters, ending long-standing customer grievances.
This information was confirmed on Sunday (March 29) by Power, Energy and Mineral Resources Minister Iqbal Hasan Mahmud Tuku.
“The monthly fee on prepaid meters has been a source of dissatisfaction among consumers for a long time. After careful review, we have decided to abolish this charge to ensure more customer-friendly electricity services,” the minister said, adding that the policy will be implemented soon.
Currently, prepaid meter users pay a fixed monthly “meter rent” even after the one-time cost of purchasing the meter. Citizens and advocacy groups have long demanded the removal of this recurring fee. Once implemented, the move is expected to slightly reduce monthly electricity expenses for prepaid customers.
