No power price hike for users consuming up to 75 units: Info Adviser
Users consuming up to 75 units of electricity will not face any price increase, according to Information and Broadcasting Adviser Dr. Zahed Ur Rahman, offering relief to low and lower-middle income households.
He made the announcement at a press briefing at the Secretariat on the country’s power and energy situation on Saturday (June 6).
Dr. Zahed said that although electricity tariffs were revised through hearings by the Bangladesh Energy Regulatory Commission (BERC), around 65 per cent of consumers will not see any increase and will continue paying existing rates under a government decision.
He said the move is aimed at protecting low-income consumers from additional financial pressure.
At the same briefing, Information and Broadcasting Minister Zahir Uddin Swapon said the current government is bearing the burden of corruption, money laundering and other irregularities committed during the previous administration.
He added that efforts are underway to ensure transparency in state management and move away from an import-dependent policy approach.
According to him, a production-oriented strategy could have helped avoid the present pressure in the power and energy sector.
