No sign of BNP fulfilling promises even after 6 months: Charmonai Pir

Islami Andolan Bangladesh Ameer and Charmonai Pir Mufti Syed Muhammad Rezaul Karim has said that while the BNP had given the people various promises before the election, there is no visible progress in fulfilling those commitments even six months after forming the government.

He made the remarks while addressing the district representatives' conference of Islami Andolan Bangladesh at the BMA auditorium in the capital on Saturday, August 29.

Rezaul Karim said the situation in various sectors across the country has deteriorated further since the BNP-led government took office. He claimed that 20,000 people have become jobless in six months and an average of 10 murders are taking place daily in the country. He described these incidents as a reflection of the government's failures.

The Islami Andolan ameer also strongly criticised the government over the law and order situation. While police are arresting suspects in many cases, the judicial process is not being carried through to the end, he said. Even after lower courts deliver verdicts, the lack of implementation is breeding frustration among people. Rather than taking action after crimes are committed, law enforcement agencies must be proactive in preventing crime, he urged.

The Charmonai Pir also expressed concern over the ongoing electricity and energy situation, saying load-shedding has reached unbearable levels and the energy crisis is putting the country's stability at risk. He called on the government to take quick and effective steps to address the energy crisis and control the prices of essentials. He also warned that public discontent could otherwise take a severe turn.

On the issue of state reform, Rezaul Karim said that while Islami Andolan had long been speaking about this, the government's role has been disappointing. The national consensus that was formed on various issues, including the presidential election under the July Charter, was not followed properly, he alleged. He claimed that the government had effectively adopted an opposition stance on other reform issues as well.

Warning the government, he said that dictatorship in the past was established by exploiting weaknesses in the constitutional framework and institutions. Therefore, the path for future dictatorship must be closed by completing necessary reforms on the basis of the July Charter. He also warned that if the government fails to implement reforms, it alone will be responsible for any dire situation in the future.
