No tolerance for mob justice, road blockades in name of demands: Home Minister
The government will no longer tolerate chaos or mob lynching under the guise of so-called 'mob culture', Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed has said in a firm stance.
He stated that if anyone creates anarchy by blocking roads or forming mobs to press demands, the government will take strict action.
He made these remarks in response to a question from Member of Parliament Rumeen Farhana during a session of the National Parliament on Monday, March 30.
During the session, Rumeen Farhana expressed concern over 'mob culture' in the current period, referring to past incidents of enforced disappearance and extrajudicial killings.
She said statistics show that between September 2024 and January 2026, between 250 and 300 people were killed in mob violence.
In response, the Home Minister said the current government has made its position clear since taking office that mob culture will not be allowed in the country.
He further stated that blocking roads or causing public suffering in the name of pressing demands is unacceptable.
However, he clarified that not all violent incidents should be labelled as mob justice. Attacks or vandalism targeting specific establishments will be treated as organised crime, and legal action will be taken accordingly.
The minister said citizens have the democratic right to voice their demands, but this must be done through memorandums, meetings, rallies, or submitting applications to relevant offices. Demands must be pursued while upholding democratic processes.
