Not as much research as should have been done on Ziaur Rahman: Mirza Fakhrul
Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives and also BNP Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir has said that not as much research as should have been done on Ziaur Rahman.
He said: 'This is a kind of injustice to history. Young researchers should come forward on this issue.'
He made this remarks the chief guest at a discussion titled 'Mass Media and Martyr President Ziaur Rahman' organized on the occasion of the martyrdom anniversary of martyr President Ziaur Rahman at the National Press Club on Sunday (June 14).
At the meeting, Mirza Fakhrul emphasized the need for more extensive research on the life, state philosophy and political thoughts of martyr President Ziaur Rahman.
Earlier, a photography exhibition was held at the National Press Club auditorium.
The BNP Secretary General said that the most important aspect of Ziaur Rahman's political philosophy was the concept of 'Bangladeshi nationalism'. He established this identity as a Bangladeshi - politically and stately. 'I think this is one of his greatest contributions.'
Mentioning Ziaur Rahman's role in establishing democracy, Mirza Fakhrul said that he believed that democracy was the best system of governance. In the turbulent post-1975 period, he took the initiative to unite political forces that believed in democracy.
Explaining the ideological basis of BNP, he said that BNP is not a party of any particular group or regiment. It is a liberal democratic political party that represents people from all classes and professions.
Highlighting Ziaur Rahman's contribution to the economy, agriculture, industry and foreign employment, he said that his far-sighted initiatives in increasing the remittance economy, ready-made garment industry, agricultural research and production have created the foundation for the country's development.
Recalling a visit to Kushtia, Mirza Fakhrul said that Ziaur Rahman's relationship with the common people was very sincere and heartfelt.
He mentioned the incident of asking for water and guava from an old woman in a village and said that this small incident proves how close he was to the people.
He said that he played an important role in strengthening Bangladesh's position in the world. Bangladesh's active participation in the United Nations and his foresight in international diplomacy are still remembered today.
Mirza Fakhrul said that various controversies have been created about Ziaur Rahman, but history has already honored him. His position in history is indelible.
The Local Government Minister further said that the foundation of the dream of an independent, democratic and prosperous Bangladesh that BNP holds was laid under the leadership of martyred President Ziaur Rahman.
