Notification issued to rename 13 govt universities

The interim government has issued a notification to rename 13 public universities previously named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, Sheikh Hasina, and her family members.

A notification was issued on Thursday (February 13) follows the January 17 announcement by Local Government and Youth and Sports Adviser Asif Mahmud Sajeeb Bhuiyan on renaming the universities.

According to the notification, "To resolve confusion from universities with similar names, the law governing university names has been amended for clearer identification. As Parliament is dissolved and urgent action is needed, the President issued this ordinance under Article 93 (1) of the Constitution."

Among the 13 universities, 10 were named after Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, one after Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib, one after Sheikh Hasina, and another after Mujibnagar.

The new names of the universities are as follows: Sheikh Hasina University in Netrokona will be renamed Netrokona University; Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Kishoreganj will become Kishoreganj University; Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman University in Naogaon will be changed to Naogaon University; Mujibnagar University in Meherpur will now be known as Meherpur University; Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Agricultural University in Gazipur will become Gazipur Agricultural University; Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Shariatpur Agricultural University will be renamed Shariatpur Agricultural University; Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Digital University in Bangladesh will become Bangladesh Digital University; Bangamata Sheikh Fazilatunnesa Mujib Science and Technology University in Jamalpur will be renamed Jamalpur Science and Technology University; Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University in Pirojpur will now be called Pirojpur Science and Technology University; Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University in Narayanganj will be renamed Narayanganj Science and Technology University; Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Science and Technology University in Gopalganj will become Gopalganj Science and Technology University; and finally, Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Aviation and Aerospace University will be renamed Aviation and Aerospace University, Bangladesh.
