Nurses at Shaheed Suhrawardy Medical College Hospital have halted all services since 8 am Thursday, protesting an alleged assault on a colleague by a doctor. The stoppage has caused significant disruption for patients seeking treatment at the hospital.

According to reports, the incident occurred on Wednesday afternoon when Dr Saikat Tawhid reportedly had an argument with nurse Kamrul Hasan during his shift. Dr Tawhid, accompanied by several others, allegedly assaulted Kamrul, who was admitted to the hospital for treatment. Dr. Tawhid is also the president of the medical college’s student wing.

During the protest in front of the hospital director’s office, nurses chanted slogans demanding justice. Senior staff nurse Nazma Akhtar said, “We demand punishment for those responsible. This kind of abuse against a colleague is unacceptable. We urge the administration to act immediately.”

Another nurse, speaking anonymously, added, “Such attacks threaten all of us. If nurses’ safety is not ensured, patient care will suffer. Incidents like this create fear and insecurity among staff.”

Efforts to reach hospital director Dr. Shihab Uddin for comment were unsuccessful.
