Law adviser Asif Nazrul has said that the oath of newly elected members of parliament will be administered by a person nominated by the president.

He made the remarks while responding to a question from journalists at the Secretariat on Thursday, February 5.

Asif Nazrul said former speakers or deputy speakers do not have the authority to administer the oath to newly elected MPs. Therefore, following the chief adviser’s recommendation, the president will nominate a person to conduct the oath-taking.

He said the nominated person could be the chief justice. If that does not happen, the chief election commissioner can administer the oath three days after the election.

However, he said waiting three days is not desirable. The interim government wants the oath to be administered as soon as possible after the election.

The law adviser added that the interim government will not waste any time regarding the oath-taking of new MPs and is committed to ensuring the process takes place at the earliest.
