Obaidul Quader among 7 faces crime against humanity charges at ICT-2

The prosecution has submitted formal charges against Awami League General Secretary Obaidul Quader and six other leaders of the party and its affiliated bodies in a crime against humanity case. 

The charge sheet was submitted to the registrar of International Crimes Tribunal-2 (ICT-2) on Thursday morning (December 18), Prosecutor Gazi MH Tamim confirmed to media today.

The other accused are: AFM Bahauddin Nasim, Awami League joint general secretary; Mohammad Ali Arafat, former state minister for information and broadcasting; Sheikh Fazle Shams Parash, president of Jubo League; Mainul Hossain Khan Nikhil, general secretary of Jubo League; Saddam Hossain, president of Chhatra League; Wali Asif Inan, general secretary of Chhatra League.

According to the prosecution, investigations into all seven defendants have been completed. Prosecutors had announced the conclusion of the probe on December 8.

The case relates to allegations of large-scale killings and serious criminal acts during last year’s political unrest, following which the Awami League’s activities were officially banned.

The tribunal is now expected to review the charges and determine the next course of legal proceedings.
