BNP Standing Committee member Salahuddin Ahmed has said that a particular political party is seeking to tactically withdraw from the upcoming election, but such a move would not be allowed to succeed.

He made the remarks at a discussion with families of victims of enforced disappearances, killings and torture under the previous government at the China–Bangladesh Friendship Conference Centre in Dhaka on Saturday (January 17).

Salahuddin said, "Attempts to obstruct the country’s democratic transition would fail and democracy would ultimately be restored."

The event was jointly organised by 'Mayer Dak' and 'Amra BNP Poribar', with affected families from across the country in attendance.

Referring to BNP Acting Chairman Tarique Rahman’s scheduled programmes in the northern region, Salahuddin said the party had temporarily suspended its activities at the request of the Election Commission to maintain calm.

“Some political parties and even the Election Commission have interpreted this gesture as weakness. But BNP’s restraint should not be mistaken for weakness,” he said, adding that the party remains committed to advancing the democratic process.
