Onion prices drop days after duty reduction
Onion prices in the country's markets experienced a sharp rise within an hour of reports on India's export ban. However, it took nine days to fall the prices in the market after the National Board of Revenue (NBR) exempted duty on onion import on November 6.
A visit to several markets in the capital showed a modest decline in prices over the past week.
Domestic onions, which were sold for Tk 140 to 160 per kg last week, are now being retailed at Tk 130 to 140 per kg while Indian onions are priced at Tk 120 per kg. Supershop Swapna outlets are selling domestic onions at Tk 150 per kg.
Despite stabilizing onion prices, other kitchen staples like garlic remain costly. Domestic garlic is priced at Tk 240 to 250 per kg while imported garlic costs Tk 240 per kg. Meanwhile, potatoes are being sold at Tk 70 to 75 per kg and eggs are priced at Tk 150 per dozen.
Several winter vegetables, however, continue to be sold at high prices. Cauliflower and cabbage are priced at Tk 50 to 60 each, while beans range from Tk 120 to 140 per kg. Tomatoes remain expensive, being sold at Tk 150 to 180 per kg. Additionally, the prices of new potatoes, sweet pumpkins, and green chilies are fluctuating, with some items like green chilies are being retailed at Tk 160 to 200 per kg.
Despite the adequate supply of most items, the continued high prices of certain vegetables and garlic are causing concern among consumers.
