Prime Minister's Adviser and spokesperson Dr Mahdi Amin has alleged that political parties opposing the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) want to confine women to their homes, while the BNP stands for women's empowerment.

He made the remarks on Monday afternoon, April 27, while addressing a discussion titled "Bangladeshi Nationalism: The Legacy of Identity" at the Teacher-Student Centre (TSC) of Dhaka University.

Mahdi Amin said that while Jatiyatabadi Chhatra Dal operates with a clear political identity, the identity of opposing groups remains unclear. He also criticised what he described as the spread of obscenity and propaganda in the name of freedom of speech.

BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi, who was present at the event, said former president Ziaur Rahman had initiated "one of the most liberal forms of nationalist politics in the world."

Other speakers at the discussion highlighted various aspects of Ziaur Rahman's political rise.
