Prime Minister’s Adviser and BNP Senior Joint Secretary General Ruhul Kabir Rizvi has accused opposition parties of displaying what he described as an “authoritarian mindset” despite their frequent criticism of the government over alleged democratic shortcomings.

Speaking at a press briefing on the country’s current political situation at the BNP central office in Nayapaltan on Wednesday (June 24), Rizvi said the government remains committed to protecting democracy, national stability and the country’s broader interests.

“While some opposition groups continue to accuse the government of fostering a new form of authoritarianism, their own political conduct increasingly reflects the same tendencies,” he said. “The government will not tolerate any activity that undermines national interests.”

Rizvi stressed that political differences are a normal part of democratic practice, but warned that actions perceived as harmful to the state or national unity would not be accepted.

Commenting on the Prime Minister’s upcoming visit to China, he expressed optimism that the trip would help narrow Bangladesh’s trade imbalance with Beijing while opening new avenues for investment, infrastructure development and economic cooperation.

“The Prime Minister is expected to pursue pragmatic and forward-looking initiatives during the visit,” Rizvi said. “We believe the outcome will strengthen economic ties, attract greater foreign investment and create new opportunities for sustainable growth.”

He also reiterated the government’s commitment to reducing external dependence and building a self-reliant, modern and economically resilient Bangladesh. According to Rizvi, efforts are underway to further strengthen democratic institutions and governance structures to support that vision.

Addressing concerns over human rights and the rule of law, Rizvi claimed that incidents such as enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings and politically motivated cases are no longer occurring in the country.

He said the government remains focused on protecting citizens’ rights and ensuring access to justice through institutional reforms and legal safeguards.
