Opposition walks out of parliament session

Opposition members of parliament walked out of the National Parliament session on Thursday, August 27, at 8:07pm during the proceedings.

Around 8pm, under the chairmanship of Deputy Speaker Barrister Kayser Kamal, the parliament session began its legislative business according to the day's agenda. Immediately after, Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman sought permission to speak. After the Deputy Speaker granted permission, the Opposition Leader raised objections over several issues, including the formation of a constitution amendment committee, the implementation of the July Charter, and the execution of the referendum verdict, before announcing the walkout.

Dr Shafiqur Rahman said, "Various important national issues are being overlooked while the formation of several special committees is being initiated at the very start of the session. More important matters, such as reforms based on the referendum verdict, should have been prioritised. The government side is repeatedly delaying the implementation of the July National Charter. In protest, the opposition has decided to walk out."

Earlier, the session had begun at 3pm with Speaker Major (retd.) Hafiz Uddin Ahmed in the chair.
