The government has formally issued an ordinance granting legal protection and criminal immunity to participants of the historic mass uprising that took place in July–August 2024.

A gazette notification was published on Sunday (January 25) in this regard.

According to the ordinance, students and citizens of Bangladesh took part in a nationwide mass uprising during July and August 2024 with the objective of toppling a fascist regime and establishing democracy, human rights, and the rule of law. The movement has since been officially recognised as the “July Uprising.”

The ordinance provides legal safeguards to those who participated in the uprising, ensuring exemption from criminal liability for actions taken during the movement.

The Advisory Council approved the ordinance on January 15 at a meeting chaired by Chief Adviser Dr. Muhammad Yunus. At the time, it was announced that the ordinance would be gazetted and come into force within five to seven days.

With the publication of the gazette, the ordinance has now taken formal legal effect.
