The National Board of Revenue (NBR) on Tuesday reported an unprecedented response from taxpayers, with more than 10,000 income tax returns filed online on the very first day of the 2025-26 tax year e-return submission.

Finance Adviser Dr. Salehuddin Ahmed inaugurated the online e-return system on August 4, ushering in a new phase of digital tax filing. Within 24 hours, 10,202 taxpayers submitted their returns electronically—a significant increase compared to 2,344 returns filed on the first day of last year’s online submission.

The NBR made online filing mandatory for all individual taxpayers nationwide from August 3, excluding senior citizens aged 65 and above, physically challenged or specially-abled individuals, Bangladeshi taxpayers living abroad, and legal representatives of deceased taxpayers.

Taxpayers experiencing registration issues with the e-return system can still submit paper returns by applying to the relevant Deputy Commissioner of Taxes by October 31, 2025, subject to approval.

Since its limited rollout last year, over 1.7 million individual taxpayers have used the online platform. The system allows payment through various convenient methods such as bank transfers, debit and credit cards, and mobile financial services including bKash, Rocket, and Nagad. Upon submission, taxpayers receive an immediate acknowledgement slip and can print their income tax certificates automatically.

The NBR has established a dedicated call center and electronic support channels to assist taxpayers with any difficulties in filing their returns online.
