From December 2024 to May 31 of this year, the number of newly arrived and registered Rohingyas was 152,029. Of these, 2,260 Rohingyas were registered as new arrivals in May. This means that this number of Rohingyas have newly entered Bangladesh in a month, according to the UN Refugee Agency UNHCR. The total number of newly registered people in March was 149,769.

The UNHCR gave this information in a monthly report on Monday (June 15). In addition, a total of 1,197,411 Rohingyas have been identified in the camps.

The UNHCR said that thousands of people have been killed in targeted violence and torture in Myanmar's Rakhine state since 2024, as a result of which the Rohingyas are seeking safety in Bangladesh. As of May 31, the UNHCR has registered 1,045,382 Rohingyas - who were displaced from Myanmar between 1990 and 2017. Of these, 39,737 arrived after 1990 and 1,05,645 arrived after 2017.

The report says that new refugees have continued to seek safety in Bangladesh since 2024 due to the escalating conflict in Rakhine State. As a result, a wave of new arrivals was identified in the camps in late 2024 and their biometric identification is underway.

Seventy-eight percent of the refugees are women and children, while 12 percent are people with disabilities, single parents, people with serious medical needs, unaccompanied minors, elderly people at risk, and others in need of legal and physical protection.
