Oxfam launches digital platform to connect Bangladeshi diaspora

Oxfam in Bangladesh has launched a first-of-its-kind digital platform, 'Bridge to Bangladesh', to connect the global Bangladeshi diaspora with the country's development priorities. The platform, comprising a website and mobile app, was unveiled at an event in Dhaka on Sunday, June 28.

The platform enables over 2.4 million Bangladeshis living abroad to contribute knowledge, mentorship, skills, advocacy, innovation, philanthropy, investment linkages and professional expertise through verified Bangladeshi organisations and individuals.

Speaking at the launch, Dr Nazrul Islam said diaspora members are eager to contribute to Bangladesh's development, and building trust and sustainable engagement is essential. He noted that the government's long-awaited diaspora policy is in its final stage and expected to be approved soon. He stressed the need for regulatory reforms, greater transparency and better facilitation through Bangladesh's overseas missions.

Expatriates' Welfare and Overseas Employment Secretary Md Mokhtar Ahmed said the initiative complements the government's efforts to engage the diaspora and could significantly strengthen future diaspora policy.

Joining virtually, UK Parliament MP and Chair of the UK All-Party Parliamentary Group on Bangladesh, Apsana Begum, said the Bangladeshi diaspora has always stood beside the country during national crises and humanitarian emergencies. She expressed hope that the platform would provide a practical pathway for British Bangladeshis and other diaspora communities to contribute to Bangladesh's development.

Oxfam in Bangladesh Country Director Ashish Damle said the initiative is a collective national vision rather than an Oxfam project, with the potential to reshape the global narrative about Bangladesh.

The platform is the outcome of a two-year research process, including a global survey of diaspora members across 12 countries. It offers verified user profiles, smart matchmaking, mentorship opportunities, community forums and impact tracking.
