After seven days of rising water, the Padma River has begun to recede in Chapainawabganj, according to the Water Development Board (WDB).

The gradual decrease in water levels could bring relief to thousands affected by recent flooding, the authorities said.

WDB Executive Engineer SM Ahsan Habib reported that the river’s water level dropped by 1 centimeter between 3.00pm Wednesday and 9.00am Thursday.

Earlier, it had risen by the same margin within a six-hour period. As of Thursday morning, the Padma’s water level stood at 21.73 meters — still 32 centimeters below the official danger mark.

Flooding caused by the earlier rise in water had inundated low-lying areas in Sadar and Shibganj upazilas, leaving more than 9,000 families waterlogged and submerging 212 hectares of cropland.

“We are hopeful that floodwaters will soon begin to withdraw from the affected areas as the Padma continues to recede,” said Ahsan Habib.

Local authorities continue to monitor the situation closely and urge residents to stay alert for official updates.
