Pahela Baishakh is a unique symbol of Bangladesh's national identity, history, culture and self-recognition, Prime Minister Tarique Rahman has said. He stated that the Bengali New Year brings a message of new possibilities and inspiration, helping to move forward by leaving behind old decay and gloom.

In a message on the occasion of Pahela Baishakh and Bengali New Year on Monday, April 13, he extended sincere greetings and congratulations to the people of the country and all Bengali-speaking people worldwide. At the same time, he bid farewell to the Bengali year 1432 and welcomed 1433.

The prime minister said Pahela Baishakh has a deep connection with the agriculture, nature and agriculture-based economic activities of this region. Even in the age of modern technology, farmers determine the timing of crop production in harmony with nature. The thousand-year-old traditions, folk culture and values are rejuvenated through the New Year.

He further said traditional events such as Baishakhi fairs, processions and Halkhata highlight the multidimensional beauty of Bangladesh's culture and strengthen national unity. The New Year instils new hope and possibilities in people's minds, creating a festive atmosphere.

In his message, the prime minister noted that after the end of a long one-and-a-half-decade rule, a new democratic government began its journey through the national election on February 12. Since taking office, the government has been implementing various programmes to improve the living standards of people from different professions.

He informed that as part of election pledges, the Family Card, Sports Card, canal excavation programme and financial assistance for imams, muezzins, khatibs and other religious leaders have been introduced. Additionally, as part of the government's engagement with farmers, agriculture and the agricultural economy, the Krishak Card distribution programme is starting from the first day of the New Year.

The prime minister expressed hope that the practice of religious and social values, tolerance, generosity and harmony among the people will further strengthen democracy and ensure the coexistence of diverse opinions.

In the context of global crises and conflicts, he emphasised the practice of peace, compassion and mutual respect. On this auspicious occasion of the New Year, he called upon everyone to rise above narrowness and selfishness and work for the welfare of humanity.

At the end of his message, the prime minister urged everyone to overcome the disappointments of the past and move forward with renewed vigour on the first morning of the new year, wishing happiness, peace and prosperity for all.
