Pandit Barin Majumdar music festival celebrated
The only specialised government-level music education institution in Bangladesh, the Government Music College, has celebrated its founder, Pandit Barin Majumdar.
The college was established in 1963 through the relentless efforts of music maestro Sangeetacharya Pandit Barin Majumdar. It first operated as the 'College of Music' before being nationalised and renamed Government Music College in 1984. In 1992, it moved to its permanent campus in Agargaon.
Since 2018, the college has been celebrating the Pandit Barin Majumdar Festival. This year, the 2026 festival was also observed throughout the day on Saturday, January 31, in two sessions.
The chief guest at the event was renowned singer Fowzia Yasmin. Special guest Parth Majumdar, the eminent music director and worthy son of Pandit Barin Majumdar, was also present.
The festival featured cultural performances by various departments of the Government Music College, including classical, Rabindra Sangeet, Nazrul Sangeet, folk music, and percussion. There were also performances by artists from Dhaka University, Jagannath University, Kazi Nazrul University, and distinguished alumni of the college.
