The National Parliament on Sunday, July 12, adopted a condolence motion mourning the death of former Speaker, Acting President, former Education Minister and senior lawyer Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar.

Members from both the government and opposition benches recalled his honesty, wisdom, statesmanship and commitment to parliamentary democracy.

Speaking on the motion, Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed described him as an exemplar of integrity and professionalism, noting that no complaint was ever lodged against him during his long legal career. He also announced that, following tradition, Sircar would be buried at the Parliament premises.

Opposition Leader Dr Shafiqur Rahman said he never took fees for providing legal assistance to opposition leaders and activists during political crises.

Local Government Minister Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir called him a "self-made man" who rose through his talent and remained committed to democracy until the end.

Barrister Jamiruddin Sircar passed away at a Dhaka hospital early Sunday morning.
