Parliament on Thursday (April 9) passed the National Human Rights Commission (Repeal and Re-enactment) Bill, 2026, restoring the 2009 law by repealing an ordinance issued during the interim government period.

The bill was adopted during a session chaired by Speaker Hafiz Uddin Ahmed.

Law Minister Asaduzzaman had earlier placed the legislation, along with two other bills seeking to repeal ordinances related to the Supreme Court secretariat and judicial appointments.

The move to repeal the interim ordinances had faced objections from opposition members during the parliamentary committee stage, with dissent notes recorded.

In addition, Parliament passed six more bills, including amendments to the Representation of the People Order, aimed at strengthening the powers of the Election Commission.

Other bills covered constituency delimitation, voter lists, provisions for election officials, repeal of interim provisions for the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat, and amendments to the Bangladesh Law Officers Act.

All seven bills were passed by voice vote without amendments or detailed discussion.
