Parliament to Discuss July Charter on Tuesday
Opposition leader and Ameer of Jamaat-e-Islami, Shafiqur Rahman, has submitted a notice in Parliament seeking discussion on the “July National Charter Implementation Order, 2025” related to constitutional reforms.
Deputy Speaker Kaysar Kamal has allocated two hours for the discussion on Tuesday, at the end of the day’s proceedings.
On Sunday afternoon, after the question-answer session, Shafiqur Rahman raised the issue on a point of order and demanded discussion. The session was presided over by the Deputy Speaker.
The Speaker stated that a decision would be made after completing the procedures outlined in Rule 71 of parliamentary rules.
Later, during an unscheduled discussion, Shafiqur Rahman said he had previously raised the matter on March 15 and submitted the notice following the Speaker’s advice.
Chief Whip Nurul Islam Moni said such notices are usually raised after starred questions and Rule 71 discussions, urging the opposition leader to wait until the proper time.
Home Minister Salauddin Ahmed said the government also has a position on the matter but stressed that discussions must follow due process to maintain parliamentary discipline and protect members’ rights.
In response, Shafiqur Rahman said he raised the issue after the Q&A session as per the Speaker’s directive, which falls within his अधिकार and responsibility as an MP.
At one point, heated exchanges took place between treasury and opposition members. The situation later calmed after the Speaker assured that the matter would be discussed at the scheduled time in accordance with parliamentary rules.
