Parliamentary standing committee meeting held on Enforced Disappearance Prevention and Remedy Bill

The decision has been taken to send the ‘Enforced Disappearance Prevention and Remedy Bill, 2026’ to the parliament after discussion at the second meeting of the standing committee related to the Ministry of Home Affairs of the 13th Jatiya Sangsad.

Detailed review of the bill was done at the meeting held under the chairmanship of committee president Zainul Abedin at the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban on Sunday (August 30). Discussions were held at the meeting on examining various aspects of the bill and giving a report to the parliament. Later the decision was taken to send the bill for introduction in the Jatiya Sangsad. Thanks were given to the Ministry of Home Affairs from the side of the committee for taking the initiative of enacting law on an important matter like prevention and remedy of enforced disappearance.

However during the meeting two members of the committee Nurul Islam and Abdul Baten walked out. Regarding this matter committee president Zainul Abedin said there is full opportunity to raise any amendment, opinion or objection of any member at the meeting. Opposition can also be made there if needed. However going out of the meeting is not consistent with the parliamentary procedure.

Discussions were also held at the meeting on the law and order situation of the country. It was said in this that no incident of extrajudicial killing has occurred in the country in the last six months. At the same time it was claimed at the meeting that although attempts of creating mobs were seen in various places no incident of political oppression has occurred in the same period. It was also mentioned at the meeting that the law enforcement agencies have not applied excessive force to control the situation.

Besides, discussions were also held at the meeting on the attempt to hold the government responsible in the incident of the abduction of Miraj Sheikh. The members opined that there is a need to look at the matter on the basis of the real reason and information of the incident by coming out of the politics of allegation and counter-allegation of this type. Importance was given on avoiding this type of ‘blame game’.

Home Minister Salahuddin Ahmed, State Minister for Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives Mir Shahe Alam, Whip of the Jatiya Sangsad Rokibul Islam, Whip Mia Nuruddin Ahammed Apu, Shirin Sultana, Nurul Islam and Abdul Baten and members of the committee were present at the meeting.

Besides, Senior Secretary of the Ministry of Home Affairs, Secretary of the Legislative and Parliamentary Affairs Division, Inspector General of Police, Directors General of various departments under the Ministry of Home Affairs, heads of the concerned agencies and officials of the Jatiya Sangsad Secretariat were also present at the meeting.
