Per capita debt of country’s people 1 lakh 29 thousand Tk: Minister

Finance Minister Amir Khosru Mahmud Chowdhury has informed the National Parliament that the amount of per capita debt of the people of the country has stood at 1 lakh 29 thousand 239 Tk 19 poisha. He has given this amount of debt to the National Parliament according to the calculation until March 31, 2026.

The finance minister gave this information in reply to the written question of Kushtia-1 constituency Member of Parliament Reza Ahammed in the session of the National Parliament on Sunday (September 6). Deputy Speaker Barrister Kaiser Kamal presided over the session.

Reza Ahammed had wanted to know what the amount of per capita debt of the people of the country is currently and what kind of steps the government has taken to reduce the burden of this debt. In reply the finance minister said the government is emphasizing increasing revenue collection, efficient management of government funds and making debt management more disciplined.

Meanwhile in reply to the question of Bagerhat-4 constituency Member of Parliament Md. Abdul Alim the finance minister also highlighted the picture of non-performing loans of the six state-owned banks. According to the calculation of June 30, 2026 the amount of total non-performing loans in these banks is 1 lakh 47 thousand 776 crore 36 lakh Tk.

In the bank-based calculation the highest non-performing loan is in Janata Bank PLC, 75 thousand 396 crore 67 lakh Tk. There is non-performing loan of 29 thousand 29 crore 67 lakh in Agrani Bank, 19 thousand 281 crore 74 lakh in Rupali Bank and 15 thousand 48 crore 39 lakh Tk in Sonali Bank.

Besides, the amount of non-performing loan is 8 thousand 131 crore 9 lakh Tk in Basic Bank PLC and 888 crore 79 lakh Tk in Bangladesh Development Bank PLC. According to the calculation given by the finance minister, almost half of the total non-performing loans of the six state-owned banks is in Janata Bank.
