Petition filed seeking caretaker government to announce new polls schedule
A petition has been filed in the Supreme Court seeking the formation of a caretaker government and a fresh schedule for the upcoming elections.
Supreme Court lawyer Yunus Ali Akand filed the petition on Monday (January 5), naming the Chief Election Commissioner and other relevant officials as respondents.
“The Constitution makes no provision for an interim government. Therefore, elections cannot be held under such a government. Only a caretaker or an elected government can conduct elections,” Akand said.
He added that the petition may be heard this week by a High Court bench comprising Justice Ahmed Sohel and Justice Fatema Anwar.
The petition also requests the suspension of the notification setting the schedule for the simultaneous parliamentary election and national referendum in the same day on December 11.
