Petitioner, lawyer fined Tk 10 lakh for filing multiple writs on same issue

The Appellate Division has fined petitioner Mohammad Nur Alam and his lawyer Sufia Ahmed a total of Tk 10 lakh for filing multiple writ petitions on the same issue regarding the appointment of a Nikah registrar, concealing information and misleading the court.

The full bench of the Appellate Division, led by Chief Justice Jubayer Rahman Chowdhury, passed the order on Tuesday, September 8.

According to the court order, Nur Alam and Sufia Ahmed must each pay Tk 5 lakh. The amount must be deposited with Dhaka Shishu Hospital within the next 30 days.

During the hearing, the issue of filing multiple writs on the same matter and concealing information about previous cases from the court was raised. Considering these matters, the Appellate Division imposed the fine against the petitioner and his lawyer.

Senior lawyer AM Mahbub Uddin Khokon appeared for Nur Alam, while Senior lawyers Anik AR Haque, Md Shishir Monir and lawyer Amit Das Gupta appeared for Nikah registrar Mijanur Rahman Murad.

According to case documents, Mohammad Nur Alam had filed multiple writ petitions with the High Court Division challenging the appointment of Mijanur Rahman Murad as Nikah registrar for Ward No. 65 of Jatrabari Police Station.

At the time of filing these writs, allegations were raised that Nur Alam had concealed information about previous cases. The issue of multiple cases on the same subject and concealment of information from the court was given importance during the hearing, leading to the fine.
